What are you really good at? Daydreaming
What are you really bad at? Suppressing my feelings
Childhood idol: Mariah Carey
Childhood memory: After watching Coyote Ugly (the movie) several times at the age of 8 I was performing on my bed, pretending it was a stage with a guitar in my hands, wearing a hat with pictures of flowers on it (thought it looked cool) and singing songs by LeAnn Rimes. Happy times.

Hello Stella! How are you?
I’m fine, thank you. Very content and excited about the future :)

How would you describe yourself as an artist?
I’m an honest singer and songwriter who makes music with her heart more than her head. I don’t follow a trend and make music where I like to push the limit and combine different styles that are close to my heart. Mostly it’s soul, R&B and jazz but other genres too. I pour my feelings into music and I think it shows in my performance.
Photo: Juho Räisänen
You are one of the participants of UMK 2016. How did it all begin?
I live in a small town in Finland named Kotka (means eagle btw). It all started from my little “studio cave” where I write my music and make demos. I made a demo of my song “Ain’t Got Time For Boys” with help from my friends. No fancy equipment or big studios. I sent my demo to UMK with hopeful thoughts about getting my music out to a bigger crowd. It was one of the happiest days in my life when I got to know I was chosen.
“Ain’t got time for boys” is the title of your song, what’s the story behind it?
Like I said I pour my thoughts and feelings into music. Sometimes it’s something that I’ve been through or sometimes I get inspired by other people’s stories. This is something I put on paper and tells about the mood I was in that moment and what my thoughts were about back then. I think every girl has her own “Beyonce moment” if you know what I mean ;)
Describe the song with 4 words:
Honest, bold, sensual, cool

What can we expect to see on stage for the performance?
Simplicity is the word for my show. It will be very intimate but by no means boring. More than that I can’t tell, you’ll have to watch it 6th of February ;)
Tell me about the official video of “Ain’t got time for boys”:
I love it! I think we really did well there with my team, I think it’s perfect for the song and really highlights the mood in it. The cast and the dancers were picked from different places, even all the way from Sweden. The whole shooting process took one day from 4 AM to 3 PM. It was my first music video ever and I had so much fun.
Have you heard any of the other songs in the competition? Any favorite?
Honestly I like them all in their own way, they are all very different from each other. To name a few of the best I would have to say Mikael Saari, ClemSO and Tuuli Okkonen.
Photo: Juho Räisänen
What do you like about Eurovision?
It’s something I look forward to every year. I love how music connects so many people together and how I’m able to hear so many kinds of different music from different cultures.

What do you dislike about Eurovision?
For me it’s all about the music, and I would love it to always be the first priority in the contest. Unfortunately sometimes things get political and that’s a shame.
Tell me the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word:
Guitar: tears
Fear: fence
Pig: chocolate
Rain: peace
Stage: excitement
Clones: scifi films
Dreams: happiness
Photo: YLE
What are your plans for 2016?
To keep challenging myself and chase my dreams and not let fear and doubt come in my way. Life will surely open the right doors so I don’t really have a script written. Mostly I’d like to release more of my music and I would love to find the right connections for that. Other than that I will just keep writing music and performing, it’s part of my lifestyle.

Is there anything you want to say to close the interview?
Dare to chase your dreams folks. Be bold. Be brave. Don’t let fear and doubt from other people guide you. I believe in you and your vision and together we are the #Stellars!
Thanks to Stella for the interview. I really like her song so I wish her all the best in UMK!

Hello Lieminen! How are you?
Hi! I'm really good, thanks. Just came from the first UMK16 dancing practice.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?
Well I'm a new singer songwriter, making all kind of music, from disco to punk to reggae. Singing mostly about positive things in life, like going out, chasing girls etc.
You are one of the participants of UMK 2016. How did it all begin?
Two years ago I said to my record label Fried, as a joke, "I wanna go to Eurovision"! Of course nothing happened, until last fall my A&R asked "Wanna go to UMK this year? Gotta answer right away, time is closing". So I said “Of course!" and here I am. Been really fun so far.

“Pehmeiden arvojen vaalijat” is the title of your song, what’s the story behind it?
I made the song with my friend/artist Stig, few years ago. Now it found a perfect time to be released! It´s a song about soft values in life. A love & party song. There´s too much cold hard values in the world nowdays.
Describe the song with 4 words:
Summer, love, soft things, party.

What can we expect to see on stage for the performance?
It´s gonna be awesome! My team has made such a good job, can´t wait to see it in full action! Not gonna spoil it too much, but some dancing in future disco...
Tell me about the official video of “Pehmeiden arvojen vaalijat”:
I had this idea about retro futuristic disco -theme. I think our director Lauri Tamminen did a great job capturing it. Guy is at home, wearing his virtual reality gear on, and starts this "night mode" game. Goes to a club, meets hot girl and the rest is history. He´s a bit wack, but in a funny way, hah.

Have you heard any of the other songs in the competition? Any favorite?
I have heard all of them. I like Pietarin Spektaakkeli and Sandhja.
What do you like about Eurovision?
I think it´s a great event! People all over the world gather together with positive vibes.

What do you dislike about Eurovision?
Hmmm, sometimes the songs are perhaps too "made" for the competition. You know, kind of like calculated to be succeeded.
Tell me the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word:
Sauna: gotta go regularly
Clones: star wars
Pizza: cheeeese
Nightmare: darkness
Stage: let´s do this
Raccoon: wild
Dreams: unicorns
What are your plans for 2016?
To do lot of music. and Eurovisions, of course!

Is there anything you want to say to close the interview?
Peace!
Thanks to Lieminen for the interview! Good luck in UMK!

How would you describe the band?
We like what “L’Agenda” magazine said about us, which describes us well: “an elegant mess”.

Tell me about the name of the band:
Oh no!
Photo: Nicolas Levet
You are one of the participants of Swiss national selection. How did it all begin?
In a bar in Geneva. Drinking on a Sunday evening can have unexpected consequences ! Disque d’or is about the music production and broadcast industry. We found it interesting to inject our song in that circuit, observe what was going to happen and learn from it. To be perfectly honest, we didn’t think we could even be pre-selected.
Photo: Nicolas Levet
“Disque d’or” is the title of your song, what’s the story behind it?
“Disque d’or”, in its orginal version has a cynical and crude approach. The story is that we wanted to describe the hypersexualization of the music industry and our schizophrenic puritanism as consumers. This leads to sanitized speeches and yet voyeur shows. Our idea was to put explicit words on what is usually implicitly shown. That is what we released in September.

Now there is a new part of the story! As requested by the swiss television, we prepared a different version, compliant with the contest rules. And it comes with a new scenario-free video that you can now watch here. Oh but we prefer the first one.

Describe the song with 4 words:
Libido, Industry, Cynicism. No fourth word sorry… the no-brand policy you know...
Photo: Nicolas Levet
What can we expect to see on stage for the performance?
Fireworks. A lot of fireworks. Then a hundred dancers. And back to fireworks. Lots. And we could perform under-water. We also heard that going to the gym could boost our sales.
Frankly ? We are currently waiting for the feedback from the official ESC choreograph :)
Photo: Nicolas Levet
What do you like about Eurovision?
Euro.

What do you dislike about Eurovision?
Vision.
Photo: Nicolas Levet
Tell me the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word:
Fire: N: Johnny Hallyday - K: Fired! - Q: Ruuuuuuuun! - F: Fire in the woods with dirty friends - L: Auto-combustion

Saara Aalto: I’m singing “No Fear” to all those people who have prejudices towards other people

Photo: Ville Paul Paasimaa
Today Im feeling fearless so Im going to post a new UMK interview. Here are the answers of SAARA AALTO:
Name: Saara (Sofia) Aalto
Birthday: 2.5
Height: 164 cm
Favorite color: pink
Favorite food: sushi
Where are you right now? In my kitchen, just finished eating breakfast
What’s your strangest talent? I have a very good memory, so I can learn things very quickly. That helps a lot when I study for example Chinese and Japanese, or a new dance routine!
What is the strangest thing you have in your room? Pink table chandelier that most people think is disgusting (but I love it!) and a diamond crown I made for one of my shows.
What are you really good at? Concentrating and focusing on things that interest me… and there are many of those things!
What are you really bad at? Normal practical things like cooking, cleaning the house… understanding jokes!
Childhood idol: Spice Girls
Childhood memory: When I was 10 years old, I wanted to have my own band, just like Spice Girls. So I established a band called “Young Stars” with my friend. We composed all the songs in English and I made the backing tracks with my computer. Dad taught me how to do that :D We were really young, but we had some gigs! It was fun and that’s when I started to compose in English!
Celebrity crush: Adam Lambert :D He’s such a good singer and confident performer! Can’t call that a crush really… :D
Tell me something no one knows about you: I always make sure I don’t have my cellphone near me when I sleep, because of the radiation.
What would you do if you were invisible? I’d like to see what my dogs are doing when I’m not at home.
Favorite movie: Little Women
Favorite TV series: Nashville, L word, 24…
If you were a boy for a day, what would you do? I’d be a charming gentleman and treat every girl as they were princesses.
What is your guilty pleasure? Chocolate ice cream
Name a song that never fails to make you happy: Japanese pop music! Like Mr. Moonlight by Morning Musume!
When did you start singing? I sang before I talked. I first sang on the radio when I was 1,5 years old.
Can you teach me some interesting words in Finnish? There are many interesting words in Finnish language, like: Lämpimämpi (means warmer) Lämmin means warm, but when you want to say warmer, you say lämpimämpi. Also “söpö” means “cute”. And if you say “sikasöpö”, it means VERY cute. But the word sika actually means a pig... so literally it means “pigcute”. But you can add “sika” in front of every word to mean VERY…it’s weird... what has a pig to do with that? :D
How would you describe yourself as an artist?
I’m an exotic fairy princess from Finland. Lots of love to share to the world. It’s all about a good show and emotional singing!

What do you remember the most from your Euroviisut 2011 experience?
I remember I was full of love and good feelings. I had an amazing group of friends with me on stage, and we really enjoyed every minute of it.
You are one of the participants of UMK 2016. How did it all begin?
The ESC is my big dream, so I thought now would be a good time. I composed the song and thought it would fit very well to the competition.

“No fear” is the title of your song, what’s the story behind it?

Most of us are afraid of people who are different than us… and some of us might even do bad things to others if they are afraid. With this song I’m singing “No Fear” to all those people who have prejudices towards other people. Why can’t we all just forget our fears and live together on this beautiful Earth. I want this song to be the happy funeral of fear, where people are dancing together!

Describe the song with 4 words:
Uplifting, hopeful, strong, loving

What can we expect to see on stage for the performance?
A grand show… one hint: origami!
Photo: Ville Paul Paasimaa
Do you already know what you’re going to wear for the semifinal? Any hint?

Malta 2016: Ira Losco

And the winner of the Maltese national final is...Ira Losco! (What a surprise!) Here is the winning song, Chameleon:
I really like her 2002 song but this is a pretty mediocre entry. Im very disappointed cause she is not a bad singer but to me this sounds like a 2006 song. I have another problem with this entry and is that she didnt even bother in doing a good stage performance like WTF? This is all you have to show?. I really hope she change the song cause she can do much better than this.
