Ever since we saw our next guest winning JESC 2015 we knew that one day she was going to step into the big stage of Eurovision and be the super star she was destined to be. Before we start talking about 2021, can we go back to 2015? What do you remember the most from your JESC experience?
The friends I made who I’m still close to till this present day and all the Eurovision fans I met along the Jesc experience.
When we fans look back to Eurovision 2020 we get very emotional about it, how was it for you and what did you learn from it when it came to deciding to select a song for this year's contest?
It was a tough one since I was emotionally attached to my 2020 song All Of My Love. But thanks to my incredible team we’ve come up with an amazing one this year once again and I’m super excited for my performance.
"Je me casse” is the title of your song, what's the story behind if?
Women empowerment, being independent and achieving your goals!

Can you describe for us the day you recorded the song? And what was your reaction when you heard the final result for the first time?
It was a very busy day and I must admit it was a magical one too. I was surprised with what Me and my team managed to create.
How do you feel about the reaction your song has been getting from the fans?
I’m thankful that you amazing people are liking it and vibin to it in such a fantastic way.

What do you like about Eurovision?
Everything... it’s such a great opportunity for people who love music and gather together to listen to different type of song genres. And it’s all about diversity and being yourself.
What do you dislike about Eurovision?
I don’t hate anything about Eurovision. There are so much positives around the contest that I would never let a negative one outweigh them.

One of the most beautiful things about Eurovision is getting to discover great artists and our next guest is a very lovely discovery for me. I heard some of her songs while I was editing this interview and let me tell you something: I'm in love with her music!. Can you teach us some interesting words in Portuguese? There's nothing more interesting than food, so I'll teach you some common food words we have here: caldeirada (like "caldeirada de enguias" - eel stew), chanfana (i.e. "chanfana de borrego" - lamb stew, typically cooked in a clay pot), feijoada, lagareiro (i.e. "polvo à lagareiro" - an octopus dish you definitely have to try!).
Hi mema, welcome to the Eurovision universe. How are you doing?
I'm doing great! Excited about Festival da Canção and getting ready for my performance! I can't wait.
How would you describe yourself as an artist?
Introspective, intimate and curious are three adjectives that describe my artistry quite well. I make electronic pop with a touch of traditional Portuguese sounds. I am in constant search for a new, fresher sound, at the same time that I look for reconnecting with my roots. It's an approach I tried with my first record out, my EP "Cidade de Sal", and that I plan to continue pursuing in the future. My music is that affirmation of who I am, together with my view of the world and life questions. There's a lot of honesty in what I do and put out in my music. I get personal, because I believe other people might relate to it too.
Stereossauro was one of the composers that RTP invited to take part in FDC 2021 and he chose you to be the singer of the song. How did it all begin?
I met Stereossauro shortly after releasing my EP "Cidade de Sal". He had been following my releases for a while, and invited me to work on a track together. This was in late October last year. Almost at the same time, RTP announced they were opening applications to Festival da Canção, and a lot of my friends were encouraging me to apply on my own. But since I was already working with Stereossauro, I decided to ask him if he wanted to join forces. To my surprise he had just received an invite by RTP to be part of the festival as an author, he said "yes", and there it began! We immediately started working on song options the next day, and soon after "Claro Como Água" was born.
"Claro como água” is the title of your song, what's the story behind it?
The title means “as clear as water” in Portuguese, and it mainly speaks of purpose, self-acceptance and striving through hardship. We had a very tough year in 2020, so we wanted to write a more positive, uplifting song. We wanted to break the cycle of bad news and melancholy somehow. So, when we were happy with the instrumental, I started trying to write the lyrics. I was a bit stuck on it, because I'm used to writing sad songs, in a way. But when I finally managed to kick-it off, it just flowed. It’s a very intimate and personal song for me. When you understand what keeps you moving forward, your reason for being here, that little light within that pulls you through, and when you accept yourself as you are, then you find a certain peace. It's that turning point where your biggest inner questions start fading away, and things get as clear as water. That's what "Claro Como Água" is all about.
Can you describe for us the day you all started working on the song?
Yeah. The day after we decided we'd go to Festival da Canção together, Stereossauro immediately sent me a bunch of beats he had prepared, so we could start choosing the type of sound we wanted for it. I remember I was on a train, going back home, when he sent me those. He's such a hardworking guy! He would send me new stuff every day, until we found the one!
How do you feel about the reaction your song has been getting from the fans?
It's been unbelievable. I wasn't expecting such a heartwarming reaction! I was a bit afraid of what the fans would think, because the song is a bit more upbeat and positive when compared to my previous works. So, I was really happy to see how positive the comments and messages were, and coming from all over the world.
What can we expect to see on stage for the performance?
We're keeping it a secret until the week of the semifinal. 🤫 All I can say is that we're in very good hands style wise, we're working with the amazing Alexandra Moura. Her clothes are incredible and I'm so lucky to be able to wear them on stage at Festival da Canção! As for the performance itself, I can say we're giving you something minimalistic, unique and heartfelt. I'm very excited about it and I can't wait to show you what we've got!
Have you heard any of the other songs in the competition? Any favorite? Yes, of course! We've got a very strong selection this year, but my favourites so far are "Saudade" by Karetus & Romeu Barios, and "Volte-Face" by EU.CLIDES (and Pedro da Linha).
The use of prerecorded backing vocals in the Eurovision performances will be allowed this year and that has set some kind of debate since some find it great but others think it could hurt the contest, as a singer what are your thoughts on this topic?
I actually think it's great. With the constant lockdowns due to the pandemic, it gets really hard to rehearse properly. Having the possibility of using prerecorded backing vocals removes that friction from the equation. Besides that, it opens new possibilities on what you can do outside of your lead vocal line. I think it's great, especially given our current context.
What do you like about Eurovision?
I love the atmosphere, and how we all put differences aside and just celebrate together. I think that's what Eurovision represents. That feeling of togetherness and celebration. It's a beautiful thing. And I love how cultural elements pop in many of the songs.
What do you dislike about Eurovision?
I think sometimes there's too much focus on the lights, props and outfits, and not in the songs themselves. I feel like the performances are also very similar each year. I'd love to see more originality in both the composition and the performances

How would you describe the sound of Karetus?
We fuse all genres of music, creating a movement we call "Full Flavor"
You were one of the composers that RTP invited to take part in FDC 2021. How did it all begin?
We had the honor of being invited by rtp, and we were immediately anxious to enter the stage, online we already had people asking us to be one of the competitors so it made perfect sense in our heads.
"Saudade” is the title of your song, what's the story behind it?
Saudade is a theme where electronic music and fado come together to “tear the mask that suffocated”. Portuguese soul with the voice of an Azorean from São Miguel (Romeu Bairos) where the chords of the viola da terra are felt. A “back and forth” where tradition and modernity come together, the word itself Saudade meaning is a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one cares for and/or loves.
The lyrics of the song talk about this Saudade mainly for everything the world goes through with the pandemic but nostalgic with a looking forward into the future.
What was the process of selecting which song to submit like? What made you pick Saudade?
Saudade is part of an album that we are working on, which gives priority to the sounds of Portugal, to our culture and tradition, together with electronic music. As if a union of the past and the present. And it made total sense to use this song in Festival da Canção
How do you feel about the reaction your song has been getting from the fans?
The feedback so far has been amazing, we didn’t expect much love from Portugal and all over the world, we appreciate it. Thank you all
What can we expect to see on stage for the performance?
We recently made 10 years of career and for those who know us know that our live performance is very important for us, we promise to give our best, we want to surprise you
Have you heard any of the other songs in the competition? Any favorite?
From the ones we heard, we liked these 3 “mema. - Claro Como Água”, “ EU.CLIDES - VOLTE-FACE” and “Miguel Marôco - Girassol” but overall all the songs in the contest have amazing quality

Tell me the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word:
We all fell in love with their voices in 2019 when they were John Lundvik's backing singers in Eurovision and last year even if the contest didn't happen they made us move our shoulders to the beat of their catchy singalong song "Move". Before talking about mello, I would like to ask you about the Eurovision 2019 experience, what do you remember the most from it and what did learn from the whole thing?
The adrenaline sticks with you! Whether you're on or off stage! The music, the people! It’s really an unexplainable experience! One of the take aways from that is how much energy goes into the competition and performance itself. We’ve learned how focused we need to be and how our work ethic plays a huge part in any result!

The cancellation of Eurovision 2020 was heart breaking for all the fans but it must have been even worse for all those teams that were going to take part in the contest, how was it for you?
Most definitely heartbreaking and disappointing. We definitely cried that first day. It was really depressing.
You are one of the participants of Melodifestivalen 2021. How did it all begin?
It began with the song; otherwise we didn’t plan on doing the competition again. The words in the song are very personal for each of us and definitely struck a chord. Our stance initially on the competition was that if we aren’t presented with a solid song that touches our hearts, we won’t compete again. Luckily, In the middle pushed us to decide to participate in Mello 2021.
"In the middle” is the title of your song, and it's written by Emily Falvey, Robin Stjernberg and Jimmy Jansson. How was it working with them?
Our direct contact with this song was Robin and while in the studio, it was really an amazing experience. He really pushed us to tap into our emotions and really think about what we’re saying in this song! It was all good vibes working with Robin and having the connection of art to Emily and Jimmy.
What’s the story behind the song?
“In the middle” is personal lyrically but also has a timeless meaning with a catchy melody. We all have different beliefs, different traditions, different ideals, but what makes this world great is what you put in it for the greater good. Why not set aside your individuality for just a minute, to meet in the middle and agree that we all need a lift, we all need love and understanding to make this world greater!
What's the process of creating a performance for mello like and who are you working with in that area?
We decided to have our same team as last year! “If it ain’t broke why fix it” lol we trust our choreographer and staging coach Zain Odestål as well as our stylist Dennis Brochner with our best interest. We consult with them on looks and ideas and trust their expertise for an outcome we can all believe in.
I'm a big fan of Swedish language music and these last couple of years I have felt that it hasn't been represented as it deserves in Mello (If we compare it to those songs in the charts). Out of the 65 songs that have finished in the top 5 from 2008 to 2020 only 10 have been in swedish, why do you think the mello world prefers english songs?
We are a very adaptable people and english is our second language. I think we send songs in english because we want everyone to understand what we are singing.
If you could invite any artist (that makes music in swedish) to mello, who would you pick?
We would love to see Linnea Henriksson or Laleh in the competition. They are great singers and have a wonderful way of telling a story in their music.
How would you explain Eurovision to those artists that see the contest in a bad way?
My first question would be, Have you actually been to the competition? There is absolutely no way that you could have bad things to say about Eurovision if you actually experience what it is to be back stage or in the audience watching all these amazing artists from different parts of Europe with the exact same dream, coming together and sharing their music! The joy is infectious! You have to be really sad to not see or feel the good in this. Those people would be in our thoughts and prayers.
What do you like about Eurovision?
The music! The different styles, the different languages! The mutual love for music! The idea that all of us are just people with a dream, not afraid to live out loud and spread joy!
What do you dislike about Eurovision?
The fact that we couldn’t compete last year lol but we can’t really blame Eurovision for that, can we lol
