The Unser song für Malmö final is next week and here  is an interview with one of the finalists (also one of my favorites): BEN IVORY

When did you start singing? I was always singing as long as I can remember, I started singing in a choir when I was 6 years old.

Why is the name of your album NEON CATHEDRAL?
As a little kid I loved THE NEVERENDING STORY by Michael Ende. I was so scared that all the fantastic creatures in the book might die if people stop believing in them and stop believing in dreams. NEON CATHEDRAL is my Ivory Tower in a way, it is the proof that we should follow our dreams and it is an invitation to everybody who does not want to live in a world without imagination and hope, to start a new religion and create something new.

Hello Ben, how do you feel right now?
Pretty well, thank you!

How would you describe yourself as an artist?
I am passionate, sensitive, resolutely and brave.

You are one of the finalists of Unser song für Malmö? How did it all begin?
I was asked by my label Warner Music if I would like to take part in the competition with some material from my upcoming debut album.  I gave them THE RIGHTEOUS ONES cause I think it is very different to what is going to be presented normally at ESC and I think it is the right time for the song to be spread on a big stage. When I heard that I made it through the selection with TRO I was very proud and happy cause I never thought a newcomer would have any chance against the other well established acts that had also applied their songs.

The Righteous Ones is your song (and i LOVE IT) who are the composer/s of the song? what is the song about?
Coincidentally I wrote the song in Malmö together with Alexander Kronlund and recorded it in Stockholm with my producers Kim Wennerström and Alex Reuterskiöld. It was mixed by Michael Ilbert in the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin. The song is an anthem for all the dissidents and outsiders, who feel lost or unable to fit into the world of today. I just wanted to tell them that they rule the world and that they are not alone. Don't listen to people who are afraid of thinking outside the box!  When I grew up music gave me the strenght to fend the righteous ones and to follow my dreams and become a musician on my own and I think that explains very well what the song is about.

Anthem, catchy, hit, ivory

What can you tell me about the performance? what can we expect?
Right now I just have a vision of many NEON lights and video animations in my head but nothing final yet cause we are still at the concept board and will start working it out in the coming weeks.

Do you know what are you going to wear for the final? 
Not now.

What do you think about the other acts in the competition?
I think it is a great mixture, there is something to suit every taste and age. I am especially happy that the BLITZKIDS mvt. are on board because it shows me that Eurovision is open for more urban and arty acts and that electronic music has made its way to the top again.

What do you like about Eurovision?
I like the format, its a big production and allows the artists to create an unforgetable show. And I like the fact that its all about music and brings so many different people together. 

What do you dislike about Eurovision?
When people are taking things too serious. The Eurovision is something positive, it is about celebrating together peacefully. You might not like every song but be respectful and keep the effort and the hard work in mind that every single act took to entertain you.

Did you watch Eurovision 2012? what do you think about the winner?
Unfortunately I haven't seen Eurovision 2012 live but of course I watched Loreens performance to prepare myself a little bit. I like the song and I think she did a great and intense performance.

Do you like any Eurovision song from Germany?
They were just not my taste of music so I can't point one out.

What are your plans for this year?
Releasing my album, going on tour and hopefully performing at EUROVISION
in Malmö.

If you were me what would you ask to the Last Panda? and tell me your answer:
What makes Last Panda special? We are a very unite group and good friends. Our music is honest and we really love what we do.

What can you tell me about the band? when did you guys start playing together? 
Last Panda was formed in 2007 but the core of the present group has been together for three years. We've been friends since we were kids but everyone has a different musical background. Me and bass player HC Knuuti have been playing in various punk rock bands, drummer Aapo is a more traditional rock guy and keyboardist Laze has been in many different bands, also in metal scene. Our newest member Matt is a very skilled guitarist and knows a lot about hard rock.

Why the name Last Panda?
Always a good question. Like I said it was 2007 when the journey of Last Panda begun. I was at the backstage of Bar 45Special, which is a legendary gig place in Oulu, Finland. The walls of the small back stage room are full of hand written messages, band names, stickers you name it. I decided that if I ever started a band it should have a name that matters. And then it hit me: Last Panda. I guess it's my way to say that look around you what's happening in the world.

The band is one of the 12 finalists in the UMK 2013. How did it all begin?
This might sound unbelievable. Me and Aapo wrote this song Saturday Night Forever. Well we had this song we found awesome but we didn't know what to do with it. My friend told me that we really should participate in UMK2013. I recall it was the night before the deadline day when I edited a short introduction film about our band and our song Saturday Night Forever. Then I sent it. I almost forgot about the whole thing until we got a message a month or so later that we had been qualified to the competition. It felt like a great surprise.

The title of your song is "Saturday night forever". What can you tell me about the song? what is the song about?
I was inspired by the movie Saturday Night Fever and some wonderful night that had happened to me. Our drummer Aapo had some good ideas about the melody and so the match was made. We just sat down and wrote the song. Sometimes it's very simple when you are having fun. I think it took something like half an hour and couple of beers until the main core of the song was done.

Describe the song with 4 words
Honest, fun and catchy raw power. 

What can we expect for the performance on stage?
Last Panda is a band that burst in fire on stage. I can promise that we will give our all but the most important thing is to have fun! Music is not a serious thing.

What do you think about the other songs in the competition? 
There are many great artists and bands in the competition and of course good songs. We are honored to be a part of this group. You could say that there's something for every taste.

What do you like about Eurovision?
The massive fuss. It's a megalomanic event and great entertainment. It would be a wow experience to see that really close in Malmö. 

What do you dislike about Eurovision?
Well, I think music and competition is not so good combination. Music is a form of art and the value of an art piece very hard to measure. Maybe people should take it more like a festival than a competition.

Do you like any Eurovision song from Finland?
I think Hard Rock Hallelujah, the winner in 2006 by Lordi, is a very good hard rock song. It's catchy.

Is there anything you guys want to say to close the interview?
Music is nothing without people who listen to it. You make us musicians matter. Listen to our song Saturday Night Forever and more importantly feel it. Check out our band because Last Panda is coming! Keep on rockin'!

Elina Orkoneva: "Last year I didn’t have the courage but this year I was ready to join the party!"

Im excited cause this is going to be the 3rd interview of the year YAY! Its the turn of ahother UMK 2013 finalist, here are the answers of the lovely and talented ELINA ORKONEVA:

What’s your strangest talent?: It's not that strange but I love to crochet, for Christmas I did something with my own hands to my family. I'm just not sure if I'm talented at it.....

What is your guilty pleasure?: Weird tv-series that no one has ever heard of. At least none of my friends! 
Name a song that never fails to make you happy: Emma Salokoski Ensemble - Veden alla. Absolutely a beautiful song. Or Sinne Eeg – Waiting for Dawn or Higway One. There are so many! When I was younger ”Killing Me Softly” was my favourite. 
Tell me one of your bad habits: I stress too much, that could be counted as a bad habit right? 
Can you teach me some interesting words in finnish: Järjestelmällistyttämättömyydelläänsäkäänköhän, that used to be the longest word in Finnish. I have no idea how to translate it to English. I don’t use that word at all either.
When did you start singing & writing?: I started singing when I learned how to talk. Writing my own songs couple years later, okay, probably ten years later. 
If you were me what would you ask to Elina? and tell me your answer:
Hmmh. Why should you win and represent Finland in Eurovision? 
Well, I have the best song! :D And I’m working very hard. It’s my dream to get to play my own music to people. In Eurovision I would play my song to millions of people! And I believe dreams come true if you keep trying very hard. (: 

We're getting closer to the live shows, how do you feel right now?
Pretty good, I've been getting some good and constructive feedback, I have my music video done and all is good :) I’m ready! 

How would you describe yourself as an artist?
I'm really hardworking. I love the gigs, I love performing my own songs and I love to be with the people. I do my music for the people. And I get so much out of it for me too. (: 

I read on facebook that you have a band and you are a vocal teacher, what can you tell me about that?
I have many bands! But this one with my own name on is my dearest one, because it performs my own music. (: I also have a pedagogical education and I focused to be a vocal teacher. I just don’t have time to teach right now because of musician work that I’m doing. I still have my masters to finnish at Sibelius Academy. 

You are one of the 12 acts that are participating in the UMK 2013. How did it all begin?
One of the pre-jury-members heard my gig over a year ago and he told me I should participate this competition. Last year I didn’t have the courage but this year I was ready to join the party! (;

He's not my man is the title of your song. What is the song about? and what made you write it?
I wrote it from my own experience. When studying abroad there was a man that was a bit too interested and I wasn't too keen on him, and he didn't really catch my hints of not being interested. I wrote the song that would tell the message clearly.

What can you tell me about the performance of He is not my man? 
It’s a secret! (; You’ll have to watch the show! 

Did you listen to the other songs in the competition? what do you think about them?
Yes, and I can point out Iina Salin's Last Night. Iina is very talented and the song is really good. She’s also very nice! 

What do you like about Eurovision?
It's Europe-wide, something that brings the whole Europe together, a little different from football or ice-hockey. 

What do you dislike about Eurovision?
This is not really a dislike to Eurovision, but it should be advertised more.

Do you like any Eurovision song from Finland?
Katri Helena's Katson Sineen Taivaan, is a good one, Kirka's Hengaillaan also, Vicky Rosti's Sata Salamaa... There are good ones. 

Did you watch Eurovision 2012? what do you think about the winner?
Yes, and the song is really catchy. Its not usual Eurovision song, but it's good. I like it!! 

Apart from this eurovision experience, what are your plans for this year?
Keep on with the normal life (gigs, more songs) and releasing my first record.

Mikael Saari: "I didn't expect anything like this, it has been great"

Now its time for the 2nd interview of the year! Wohooo! and its the turn of a very interesting finnish artist. He is one of the finalists of the UMK 2013 and he is also one of my favorites  in there so lets get to know him better. Here are the answers of MIKAEL SAARI:

Can you teach me some interesting words in Finnish?: Ruska is a great finnish word, it's when the green of treeleaves changes to all colors of red and yellow and orange.
Tell me some of your bad habits: I drink too much and eat too much fast food. And I'm very bad at waking up in time in the morning and I'm always late from everywhere.
Which famous artist would you like to work with and which song would you like to feature?: I know I'll never what it takes to do that  but I would like  to become Adam Lambert and lead Queen in concerts...
When did you start singing?: Publicly when i was 15.

The live shows are getting closer. How do you feel right now?
Beforehand I imagined that i would be terrified, but now I just can't wait to get on the stage! And it's still almost two weeks to go... Luckily I have other gigs before that, so time flies.

How would you describe as an artist?
I'd like to say that as an artist I'm versatile. I make musicals and acoustic gigs and showbandstuff, all kinds of very varying stuff.

You are one of the finalists in the UMK 2013 selection. How did it all begin?
I had written songs for my debut album, and then came across this oportunity. So i chose one of the songs to be sent to the competition, and that's how it started.

We should be through is the title of your song. What is the song about? and what made you write it?
I wrote the piano parts on my ex-girlfriends piano, in our ex-house. The lyrics came afterwards, and were inspired by that.

Dramatic, intimate, in-your-face, ballad

How did you feel the day of the performance for the juries?
I had mixed feelings, i was very nervous performing the song for the first because it was also the first time I saw who the judges were. During the first verse I was just squinting to the audience.

What do you feel about the reaction of the public with your song?
It has been overwhelming, I didn't expect anything like this, it has been great, and the whole hasn't even really started yet.

There's a lot of people loving the jumper you wore in the performance for the juries, do you know what are you going to wear for the live shows?
I do, but let's keep it a secret for now!

Did you start preparing the next performance? what can you tell me about it?
I think we will keep it very simple, but I'm glad i will have my band my band with me on stage!

What do you think about the other songs in the competition? 
There are so many great songs! I'm so proud to be amongst them, It's great.

What do you like about Eurovision?
There is something about the grandeur and feeling about it that cannot be explained. It's unique.

What do you dislike about Eurovision?
I've heard a lot of discussion now about what kind of songs would maybe be succesful in the contest, and I don't like that at all. People shouldn't of anything like this a competition. Just vote for the song that you yourself like, without any speculation.

Do you like any Eurovision song from Finland?
I don't have a very close relationship with any of them, I have to say. But of course i've liked many of them, Hard Rock Hallelujah for example!

Did you watch Eurovision 2012? what do you think about the winner and the finnish song?
Our Pernilla was so good I liked her a lot! And I loved Estonia's Kuula and the song Suus from Albania I think? Many great songs there.

Is there anything you want to say to close the interview?

You are one of the semifinalists of the Lithuanian National selection, how did it all begin?
In the attic of my parents house with the words "I have to tell you something"

"Something" its the title of your song, what is the song about?, what made you write it? and did you write it thinking of eurovision?
Something is about something that everybody lives in their life. A pen made it and yes i wrote it for Eurovision

Your stage performance in the 1st heat was very interesting, is there a story behind that performance? and are you going to do the same in the semifinals?
It was an idea of an old fashion english friend but i think i will try to create a new modern character for the coming performance.

Duality of life

What do you like about Eurovision?
 I like that is the oldest popular music song contest and it has history and traditions

What do you dislike about Eurovision?
I dislike that is too standardized duration of the songs (Maximum 3 minutes)

What do you think about the other songs in the selection? do you like any of them?
I think that there are some strong songs and that the artists are preparing the performances not so bad. Yes i enjoyed listening to the songs "Loreen" and "Sacrifice"

Do you like any of the last eurovision winners?
I think that "Euphoria" was a catchy song

What do you think about Lithuania in Eurovision? 
I think that this year we will have a chance

Eurovision 2012: Congratulations Loreen

Can you imagine how happy i am? YAAAAAAAAAY Thanks thanks thanks to all Europe, thanks to the ones who voted for sweden and thanks to those who are buying the song on itunes! I knew in my heart that she was going to win but i didnt want to think about it cause if something else happen it sucks so i tried to stay calm and wait to see the voting results. Back then in march when she won the Melodifestivalen i was very excited cause i knew this song was going to be a succesful entry in the charts around europe and yeah i was right, look all the itunes top 10 and see that Euphoria is on the top. I really admire Loreen cause she is a very talented, humble, down to earth girl that gave us her heart in every performance, i wish her all the best in her career cause she deserves it. THANK YOU LOREEN! for all the emotions you gave me since the 1st time i heard the song, as i said before, this song is really important for me and im very happy right now, a huge round of applause to all her team and im sure we all are ready for SWEDEN 2013.
